Black and White
Available spots
Service Description
In this four-part class, students will learn to paint from life using black and white acrylic paint. Students will build skills in observation, composition, gesture, measurement, light, shadow, and value while developing their own artistic style. Classes will include drapery, organic objects, and man-made objects. Students will learn to slow down, look closely, and translate what they see into paint. Class 1: Gesture, Measurement, and Composition Students will practice gesture and measurement exercises, then begin a still life composition on canvas or canvas panel. They will learn how to establish placement, scale, proportion, and basic structure. Class 2: Light and Shadow Students will study how light affects objects and how to identify highlights, light planes, core shadows, reflected light, and cast shadows. Students will mix black and white to create a range of values and use those values to describe form, volume, depth, and the relationship between objects and background. Class 3: Push and Pull Students will learn how acrylic painting allows room for correction and revision. They will create value swatches, evaluate what is working, identify what needs to change, and practice making adjustments. Students will continue refining shapes, proportions, placement, value relationships, light, shadow, and composition while maintaining their own artistic interpretation. Class 4: Artist’s Choice and Final Painting Students will combine techniques from previous classes while focusing on their own strengths and style. The final class will be dedicated to completing and refining a finished black-and-white still life painting. Please bring the following SUPPLIES: • At least six canvas panels or canvases, minimum size 8" x 10". • Brushes suitable for acrylic painting. • One tube of ivory black or mars black acrylic paint and one tube of titanium white acrylic paint.
